Say no to adsHave you ever noticed that everyone in clothing ads or catalogs is beautiful and perfect? That is certainly not a reflection of the majority of us! Granted, a few ‘non-traditional’ models and spokespeople have emerged, like America Ferrera and Camryn Manheim. But those examples are still hard to find.

So instead of looking to Madison Avenue or Hollywood for fashion role models, look in your own backyard. Find someone whose style you admire, no matter what their size. Watch what they do … how they combine colors, prints and textures. If you feel comfortable with that person, ask them where they shop (or if they will take you with them).

Look Great at Any Size

For example, I once had a friend who was about 5’4″ and a size 20+. She was one of the classiest dressers I’ve ever seen. She had a wonderful knack for putting together unique combinations that made a statement. And forget everything you’ve ever heard about not wearing bright colors if you’re a plus-size! She wore striking shades of purple, yellow and turquoise.

But not only did she dress in such a way that no one focused on her size, she also carried herself with a great deal of self-assurance and poise. Now this may be the harder part of the task. It doesn’t happen overnight. You have to start telling yourself that you are a beautiful person, and keep saying it until the person in the mirror believes it!

And ladies, the next time you see a woman who looks great, tell her you love her outfit and ask her where she found it … no matter her size or yours!
