Image for Job Hunting

I’m often asked how to redesign your image when looking for a job. While this is different for every situation, there are some common factors to consider:

  • What does your current image say about you?
  • What new image would you like to project?
  • Will any of your current wardrobe translate into the new you? (If not, don’t worry … the Image@Work Club will help you figure that out.)

Map Out a Plan

Where do you want to be in a year … or how about five years? Write down what career you will have, how you will look, how you will behave, and how you will be treated by those you work with.

Now, the moment of truth … how close does today’s image match up? This will give you some direction for change.

The first step is to observe others in the company or position you want to have. Pick a role model to emulate. Make sure it’s someone who is already succeeding at the level you want. There’s no point in aspiring to someone who is at or below your level.

The next step is to begin making changes that move you in the direction of your goals. Do you need to change your hairstyle? Maybe your whole wardrobe? Don’t try to do it all in one week. Always remember the saying, “You can eat an elephant a bite at a time.” Start with your short-term goals and go from there. Soon, you’ll see your “elephant” being conquered.

Along with making changes comes giving up old habits. Do you have bad posture? Do you bite your nails or jangle your keys? Now is the time to kick the habit. Remember you can learn or unlearn a habit in 21 days. If you start this week, you can be over it within a month!

Here are some more things to do:

  • Write positive affirmations and post them around your apartment or dorm room (mirror, refrigerator, by the phone, etc.) of what you are becoming, then read them daily.
  • Start a “Style File” with clippings of looks you’d like to have. (You’ll learn more on this in other articles.)
  • Evaluate your closet to discover what to toss and what still has potential (this may require the help of a friend … or a wardrobe expert).
  • Begin shopping, with a list! (Again, you may want to take someone with you.)
  • Keep reading those affirmations!
  • Join a fitness center or dance class to get yourself in shape (if that’s part of the problem) or just to feel good about yourself and work off stress.
  • Consider talking to a career counselor if you’re not sure what direction you should take.
  • Spend time to treat yourself at intervals along the way. Change is never easy, but you can do it!

Be sure to share how you implement these changes. The Image@Work Club is here to help everyone achieve their goals together!
