In case you still doubt whether or not dressing up pays off, a survey of frequent business travelers confirms that the way you look can influence the way you’re treated. Respondents said they have gained everything from extra beverages on the plane, to seat upgrades and better hotel accommodations.
Of the 600 travelers surveyed, 77% of the men and 68% of the women who dress up when traveling do it because they get better service. A nice professional suit can mean a much higher level of respect than a T-shirt and jeans. You just aren’t taken seriously when dressed like a tourist, according to many travelers. And as a frequent flier, I’ve observed that the few times I received extra scrutiny in the airport was when I chose to travel in jeans and tennis shoes.
Other reasons survey respondents mentioned for dressing up when traveling included a desire to look good in case you meet someone interesting (28% of women, 18% of men), or so your good clothes aren’t lost with your luggage (12% of women, 9% of men).
